On July 1, 2006, Cory Booker was sworn in as the 38th mayor in Newark's history.
As New Jersey's premier city, Newark possesses a strong government presence. Numerous state and federal agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, maintain offices here. In addition, New Jersey's United States senators, several congressional representatives and U.S. District Court are located in Newark. Newark is also the Essex County Seat and site of the Essex County Courthouse, the busiest in the state. Operating from the golden-domed City Hall, an extensive array of city agencies serves the many needs of Newark's large population.
